Error: You are using a disk utility...(due to earlier MS-DOS version).
Error:
You are using a disk utility that was designed for an earlier version of MS-DOS.
Cause:
UNDELETE cannot be run from within Windows 95. Installing Windows 95 over Windows 3.1x replaced the previous version of MS-DOS with the Windows 95 DOS version (7.0) and the system has not been configured for a multiple boot.
Solution:
Remove the attributes from Msdos.sys, edit the file, and add BootMulti=1. Press F4 when starting the computer to go to the previous MS-DOS version, and then use the UNDELETE command.
NOTE: The following procedure will work only if the previous MS-DOS version still exists on the drive.
1) In MS-DOS, type EXIT at the prompt, and press ENTER to go to the Windows 95 desktop.
2) To be able to boot to a previous MS-DOS version, edit Msdos.sys, and add BootMulti=1.
3) Shut down Windows, and reboot the computer.
4) When the computer restarts, press F4. (The message 'Now booting to a previous version of MS-DOS' appears.)
5) To change to the directory in which the file was deleted, type the following and press ENTER:
CD <directory name>
(where <directory name> is the directory from which the file was deleted).
EXAMPLE: CD MYDIR
6) Type UNDELETE, and press ENTER.
7) Type 'Y' to confirm the undelete.
8) Type the first letter of the filename when prompted.
9) Reboot the computer to return to Windows 95.
